Zita, the last Empress of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, will be the defendant in a civil suit brought against her by the Jewish community of Promontor, near Budapest, on the basis of a promise made to the community by the late Emperor, Franz Josef.

According to the claim, Franz Josef is said to have twice repeated his promise to grant a site at Promontor for the erection of a synagogue. When the trustees demanded the allocation of the site, the ex-Empress refused to grant it.

In a statement published in the “Wiener Journal,” Count Hunyady, chief chamberlain of the former Empress, declares first, that ex-Empress Zita, not being a legal heir to the late Emperor Franz Josef, cannot be held responsible for his estate, and secondly, that the site upon which the community lays its claim, has been sold long ago.
