For the Jewish community in Omaha, the new year seems to be beginning with the promise of renewed activities in every branch of work, in private and business affairs, and also in communal enterprises.
One of the movements is the beginning of a concerted effort to bring to Omaha a rabbi to found a conservative synagogue. Despite the existence of five orthodox congregations, there has been a feeling that a congregation occupying a middle ground between Orthodox and Reform is needed.
The Nebraska State Conference of Social Work will hold its annual convention in the Jewish Community Center of Omaha on November 11, 12 and 13. Samuel Gerson, executive secretary of the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Welfare Federation, is chairman of the program committee. Among the speakers to address the conference will be Abraham Epstein, executive secretary of the American Association for Old Age Security.
Local Jews are vitally interested in the success of the annual Community Chest drive which will begin October 15, since a number of Jewish institutions receive sustenance therefrom. The Jewish Welfare Federation is asking for $45,000 this year, and through its administration, funds will be provided for the Wise Memorial hospital, the Home for the Aged, the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. and other institutions.
William Holzman, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, has been made chairman of the special gifts committee, and Henry Rosenthal, president of Temple Israel, chairman of the foreign corporations committee. Harry H. Lapidus, president of the Jewish Community Center, is a major, head of one of the large divisions of teams. A large number of Jewish men and women are scheduled to take part in the campaign. The quota this year is $446,649.
Judge Irvin Stalmaster has been appointed to a chair of law in the University of Omaha.
Children of local Jewish families will begin the season with much greater opportunities for Jewish instruction than were available at the beginning of last season. Besides the Talmud Torah and the Temple Sunday School, there is now the Sunday school of the Jewish Community Center, organized last year, and the Dundee Talmud Torah, a new branch of the Hebrew school opened for the benefit of children living in Dundee, one of the most fashionable sections of the city, which has become a center of prosperous Jewish life. The Talmud Torah recently conducted a drive to raise funds for its increased activities.
