Because of the fact that the “Yiddish Folksblatt,” a Yiddish publication, lent its support to the Belzer Rebbe, his opponent, the Muncaczer Rebbe, Rabbi Spira, proclaimed a Cherim (religious ban) on the editor, the newspaper, the subscribers and all readers.

The ban was pronounced with all the attending ceremonies as prescribed in the ritual. The opposition against Rabbi Spira and the preaching of niodern ideas were given as the cause for the Cherim as “actions hostile to the teachings of Judaism.”
