William Spiegelberg, who went to settle in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1859, traveling by rail, steamboat and mule train, died in New York on Thursday at the age of 85.

Mr. Spiegelberg who with his brother, who settled there in 1846, was among the early pioneers of the state, became an outstanding citizen in the community. He was elected probate judge of the county of Santa Fe by a large majority, receiving the support of prominent Catholics, including the Archbishop, against one of their own faith. In the Cleveland administration, the governorship of the then territory of New Mexico was offered to Mr. Spiegelberg, but he declined it. Forty-one years ago he retired from business, coming to settle in New York.
