The laying of the foundation stone for a new synagogue in Sao Paulo, Brazil, called Beth Israel, took place recently, the headquarters of the Jewish Colonization Association here announce.
Chief Rabbi Raffalovitch, the representative of the Ica who officiated, consecrated the foundation stone in the name of the Jewish Colonization Association, declaring the Ica was the real animating force of Judaism in Brazil and that it had achieved a great deal in promoting Jewish immigration to that country. The entire population, without distinction of creed, took an active interest in the ceremony and the press devoted to it a good deal of space and several articles.
The funds necessary for the construction of the synagogue have already been secured. In addition to the synagogue, the building will include a school house and a large meeting hall. The plan of the building has been drafted by a Jewish architect, S. Roder. The original draft of the plan was exhibited in Paris where it was awarded a prize. Several other Jewish communities in Brazil in which the Jewish Colonization Association is interested are endeavoring to follow the example of the community in Sao Paulo.
