Among the 10,288 men employed in the postal service in Congress Poland, there is only one Jew. This fact was brought to the attention of the Minister of Posts, Miedzinski, by Senator Koerner, at a meeting of the Budget Commission of the Polish Senate.
The Minister in explaining this fact stated that there are two reasons why Jews are not to be found in the postal service, first, because preference is given to ex-service men and secondly, because Jews are not “physically fit for the difficult work of letter carriers.”
The Jewish deputies recalled, in connection with this reply, that when the same question was raised in the Budget Commission of the Sejm, the same Minister of Posts, Miedzinski, replied that “the Ministry is quite ready to engage Jewish letter carriers, but the Jews do not want to undertake such difficult work.”
