Col. Lit, Merghant and Philanthropist, Dies in Philadelphia

Funeral services for the late Col. Samuel D. Lit, chairman of the board of directors of Lit Brothers’ department store and outstanding leader in welfare undertakings who died here on Thursday, will be held on Sunday. Col Lit was 68 years old.

For the past forty years Col. Lit had been active in welfare work in Philadelphia, both within the Jewish community and in general undertakings. He headed several campaigns of the Philadelphia Federation of Jewish Charities of which he was a director and was a member of the boards of the Jewish and Mount Sinai Hospitals, Gratz College and the Family Society of Philadelphia. During the war he served as chief of supplies of the American Red Cross. Southeastern Pennsylvania division, which he headed for some time. He was a member of the Delaware River Bridge Commission and the Board of City Trusts. He served on the military staffs of Governors John K. Tener and Martin G. Brumbaugh.

Born in Philadelphia, Samuel D. Lit began his career as a plumbing apprentice. For fourteen years he was a book salesman. With his brother Jacob Lit he founded a store out of which grew the present Lit Brothers’ department store of which he was president until last October. He became the chairman of the board when the business passed into the hands of the City Stores Company and the Bankers Securities Corporation which paid more than $10,000,000 for a controlling majority of the stock.
