Denial of a statement that the American Federation of Labor favors the national origins clause was made by President Green.
In a letter to Senator Walsh of Massachusetts, Mr. Green said the American Federation of Labor is not ready to endorse the revision of the immigration quotas provided in the controversial national origins provision which is soon to go into effect.
“We are not sure that this law (national origins) would serve to restrict immigration in the very definite and practical way which labor desires in order to protect its economic and social interests,” he said. “Until we are certain of this fact we are committed to the existing quota provisions as embodied in the immigration law.”
The letter of Mr. Green was sent as a denial of a statement made by Senator Reed, Republican, of Pennsylvania, the champion of the national origins provision, in Senate debate.
