A fine of 1,000 pengoe was imposed by the Budapest court upon Senator Josef Veszi, life member of the Senate, because of an article published in the “Pester Lloyd” of which Senator Veszi is the publisher. The article charged that Count Teleki, leader of the Hungarian anti-Semitic forces, instigated the anti-Semitic student excesses in the Hungarian universities and was responsible for the numerus clausus propaganda.
Considerable surprise was evident in political circles in December that the Senate lifted the immunity of Josef Veszi, who was appointed life member of the Upper Chamber by a decree of Admiral Horthy. Regent of Hungary, in recognition of the publisher’s service to Hungary, on the occasion of his 50th anniversary as publisher of the influential “Pester Lloyd.”
In lifting the immunity of the Jewish Senator the Upper Chamber overrode the recommendation of its committee on Senators’ immunity in order to allow the court to take action brought by Count Teleki.
