A pension of $125 a month was voted by the United States Senate for Mrs. Mary Goldberger, widow of the late Dr. Joseph Goldberger, discoverer of the cause and cure or pellagra. Announcement of the Senate’s action in granting the pension was made by Senator Reed Smoot of Utah.
Senator Ransdell introduced the bill for the granting of the pension. Senator Smoot made the announcement to counteract misapprehension on the part of certain newspapers throughout the country which published editorials voicing criticism that the Senate had not granted the pension to Mrs. Goldberger.
“Mrs. Mary Goldberger the widow of Dr. Joseph Goldberger has been granted a pension of $125 per month. The bill was reported to the Senate favorably, and when the Calendar was called, there was no Committee Reports and for that reason, and for that only. I asked that the bill go over. The very next time the Calendar was called the bill was passed without a single objection.” Senator Smoot declared.
