Mark 110th Anniversary of Isaac M. Wise

The one hundred and tenth anniversary of the birth of Dr. Isaac M. Wise was commemorated today in Hebrew Union College Chapel.

Dr. Wise was born in Steingrub, Bohemia, on March 29, 1819. He died in Cincinnati on March 26, 1900.

His achievements include the organization of Reform Judaism in America, founding in 1875 of the Hebrew Union College, and establishment in 1854 of “The Israelite,” which later became “The American Israelite.” To him is attributed in large part the birth of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in 1873 and the Central Conference of American Rabbis in 1889.

From 1846 until 1854, he served as Rabbi in Albany, N. Y. From 1854 until his death he was spiritual leader of Congregation B’nai Yeshurun at Cincinnati.

He was a prolific author and published “The Deborah,” a German weekly established by him in 1855, as well as “The Israelite.”

Rabbi Abram Hirshberg, of Temple Sholom, Chicago, I11., spoke. Dr. Julian Morgenstern, president of the College, presided.
