Vatican Considers Transfer of Church’s Jurisdiction to Egyptian Delegate

The transference of the jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Palestine, now held by the Apostolic Delegate to Syria, to the Apostolic Delegate to Egypt, in the British zone of influence, is under consideration by the Vatican, according to a news report from Milan to the Ullstein press service.

In connection with this the news agency states that it learns that negotiations between the Vatican and the British government for the settlement of the question of the administration of the Catholic Holy Places are in progress.

The Vatican and the Soviet government have unofficially reached an agreement which would give the Roman Catholic religion in Russia greater freedom than it now has, according to a cable from Rome to the “New York Sun.”

The correspondent, Carroll Binder, states that he learns on the basis of authoritative information that the Vatican is about to score a new diplomatic success which will rival in importance the recently concluded concordat with the Italian government. Barring unforeseen impediments, a formal accord will presently be drawn up in which the Vatican will recognize the Soviet Government and the church will embark on an extensive religious campaign in Russia with the full consent of the Government, the correspondent writes.

It is expected that the Bolsheviki, despite their official predilection for atheism, will send an ambassador to the Holy See. Commissioner of Education Lunacharsky is being mentioned for that post.
