Over three hundred students and faculty members of Southern colleges participated in the intercollegiate conference held at Rollins College here April 19-21 for better understanding and relationship of Catholics, Protestants and Jews. The suggestion that similar parleys be held at colleges throughout the country was voiced by a number of the speakers.
Rabbi Solomon Goldman addressed the session, contrasting Judaism and Christianity, calling Judaism a culture while Christianity is a religion. The religion of the Jews is eclectic, Rabbi Goldman said. Father Ross of New York represented the Catholics and William Adams Brown, the Protestants.
“Philosophy and Religion” was the subject of an address by Cornelius Kruse. The Rev. Everett Clinchy, secretary of the Committee on Goodwill between Jews and Christians of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America, spoke on “Religion and Social Relationships. Round table discussions were led by each of the speakers. Several of the sessions were held in the home of President Hamilton Holt of Rollins. The other sessions were held on the campus.
Oscar Leonard of St. Louis has been selected as Executive Director of the Federation of Jewish Welfare of Washington, D. C. Mr. Leonard is well known in Jewish communal life, having served as director of Jewish charitable and educational endeavors of St. Louis for ten years. He was a member of Unit One of the Joint Distribution Committee where he served as Social Service Director of Roumania.
In the past two years Mr. Leonard was engaged in the work of the B’nai Brith Wider Scope Committee, working with Dr. Boris D. Bogen.
The Federation of Jewish Welfare in Washington comprises all Jewish welfare activities in the District of Columbia.
