A Board of License, whose purpose it will be to set a standard of requirements for Hebrew teachers in the city of New York will shortly be established it was announced Sunday by Bernard Semel at the annual meeting of the Jewish Education Association at the Park Royal Hotel.
Mr. Semel who is the acting chairman of the Board of License, told of the conferences held with principals’ associations, teachers organizations and laymen which led to an agreement for such action.
According to the plan, the Board of License is to be called into being by a Committee consisting of thirty Hebrew teachers and laymen, representing all shades of Jewish opinion. This Committee, which is to meet once or twice a year, is authorized to elect a Board of License to consist of prominent educators. The Board of License in turn will be permitted to employ paid examiners for carrying out its functions.
A group of ten has already been chosen to places on the Board and consists of the following: Dr. Benjamin Veit, Dr. P. Churgin, Dr. Leo L. Honor, Israel Konowitz, Rabbi A. Landesman, Rabbi J. Levinson, Professor Morris Levine, S. L. Maximon, H. Handler, Dr. David de Sola Pool.
One hundred and fifty members and supporters of the association attended the meeting on Sunday. Reports were rendered by Israel Unterberg, President of the Association; Harry H. Liebovitz, Treasurer; Jacob Wener, Chairman of the Committee on Admissions; Jacob H. Cohen, Chairman of the Committee on Repairs, and president of the Jewish Education Mortgage Ass’n., Inc; Samuel Rottenberg, Chairman of the Committee on Prizes; Jonah J. Goldstein, Chairman of the Committee on Campaign; Bernard Semel, Chairman of the Committee on Literature and Publications, and Mrs. Gabriel Hamburger, Acting Chairman of Ivriah, the Women’s Division of the Ass’n. David N. Mosessohn presided.
With only 103,000 Jewish children of the 375,000 in New York City receiving a Jewish education, an average of 27½% the situation is far from satisfactory, declared Mr. Unterberg.
Nevertheless there is a trend upwards in Jewish education. In a period of seven years, there has been an increase of 25,000 in the number of children receiving reliigous training he said.
