A drive to enlist the support of Boston Jewry in petitioning the Boston School Committee to appoint a Jewish attendance officer was launched with the passing of resolutions by the Boston Association of Jewish Congregations, representing ten of the largest congregations, with over 8,000 members. The Boston School Committee was recently accused in open session at a legislative hearing that the present board has ignored the demand of the Jewish community for the appointment of such an officer.
The fight has now been waged for over two years without success. Moses Mishel, president of the Boston Association of Jewish Congregations, and Rabbi Samuel Wolk, secretary, forwarded the resolutions to the school committee. Twenty per cent of the Boston public school children come from Jewish homes, recites the resolution. The Italian section has such an officer, but the board has failed to this date to meet the demands of leading Jewish representatives. With the adoption of these resolutions the fight is again to be opened. The leading rabbis of the city, the local B’nai B’rith and other organizations have indorsed the proposal.
