A reception marking the completion of the Wolffsohn Memorial Library of the Hebrew University was held in Jerusalem on Monday afternoon, the American Advisory Committee of the Hebrew University announced. Among the distinguished American visitors present at the reception in the large reading room of the Library were Felix M. Warburg, member of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University and chairman of the American Advisory Committee, and Dr. Cyrus Adler of Philadelphia. Other notables present were Sir John Chancellor, High Commissioner of Palestine, Norman Bentwich. Attorney-General of Palestine and Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of the Zionist Organization.
After the reception, the building was thrown open for inspection. A concert by the Jerusalem Music Society was held in the Open Air Theatre of the University, which has been built as a memorial to his wife by Samuel Untermyer of New York.
Due to the delay in the arrival of book-stacks, ordered from Germany, the building will not be formally dedicated until June, 1929. At that time the collection of books, comprising over 200,000 volumes, will be gathered on Mount Scopus in the new building. The collection has hitherto been housed in four buildings in Jerusalem, one of which will be retained under University auspices as the City Library.
The American Advisory Committee celebrated the opening of the Library in a series of meetings and addresses. Dr. John Haynes Holmes, Pastor of the Community Church of New York, and James Waterman Wise, Executive Secretary of the Avukah Organization, delivered radio addresses on the Hebrew University and the new library over WMCA.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
