First Jewish Lord Mayor of Belfast Dies

Sir Otto Jaffc, the first Jewish Lord Mayor of Belfast and twice re-elected to the post, died here at the age of 83.

Sir Otto was born in Hamburg in 1846. He was educated in Belfast and Switzerland. For many years he was head of the firm of Jaffe Brothers. Jinen merchants of Belfast. He was greatly interested in progressive and philanthropic movements. He founded an elementary model school chiefly for Jewish children.

He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law by the Royal University of Ireland. Besides occupying the post of Lord Mayor of Belfast, he was at one time High Sheriff of the County of the City of Belfast. Last March Sir Otto and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
