A homeless men’s department was opened by the Jewish Social Service Association, a constituent agency of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies, at 799 Broadway, a few blocks from the Bowery.
It has been only of recent years that efforts have been made by social agencies to understand the hobo and the tramp, states the announcement of the Association. For centuries he has been jailed and ostracized by the police authorities. Special departments in family organizations have been created of late for the purpose of rendering constructive aid to these homeless men and to effect their adjustment in society rather than promote their pauperization by indiscriminate almsgiving.
