The concert of Hebrew Sacred and Biblical Music, Old and New, which Lazare Saminsky conducted in Rome a fortnight ago at the invitation of the Royal Academy of Santa Cecilia, was a brilliant success, both artistically and socially. The Princess Mafalda, eldest daughter of the King of Italy, the Royal Duchess of Hassia, Mrs. Henry Fletcher, wife of the U. S. Ambassador, members of foreign embassies, the presidents of the Royal Academy and the Augusteo concerts, and other prominent people attended this concert and expressed their delight. Mr. Saminsky’s program included Pavel Lvoff’s “Chassidic Feast.” Moussorgsky’s “King Saul,” songs by Achron and Zeitlin, sacred choruses from Jemmen and Palestine, and his own prelude to “Jephta’s Daughter.”
On the following day, Mr. Saminsky gave a lecture-recital devoted to Hebrew religous music at the Institute of Hebrew Studies in Rome.
The cornerstone of the new Dorchester Mattapan Hebrew School, now under construction in Mattapan, Mass., was set and the building dedicated on Sunday. The building, which is three stories high, built of stone and granite will serve as school and community center.
Morris S. Schneider ex-president of the Hebrew School, was master of ceremonies. Max Nigrosh introduced Samuel Goldstein, president of the school.
Besides its numerous classrooms, the building, which is being erected at a cost of $125,000, will have a large auditorium, gallery, rabbi’s study, committee rooms, auxiliary rooms for social purposes, and assembly hall and banquet room.
