B’nai B’rith Opens District Convention in Mobile

The fifty-sixth annual convention of District Grand Lodge No. 7 of the Independent Order B’nai B’rith was convened here Sunday morning. A large attendance and considerable enthusiasm marked the opening session. The meeting was opened by Charles Jacobson of Little Rock, Arkansas, with the annual message. The invocation was given by Rabbi Walter Peiser of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Addresses of welcome were made by Mayor Cecil Bates for the City of Mobile, Milton Brown for the Jewish community and the Rev. Dr. John W. Phillips for the Christian community. Maurice Hirsh of Houston, Texas, responded for the delegates. An opening meeting was held at the Government Street Temple Sunday night, Rabbi Ira Sanders of Little Rock, Arkansas, delivering the principal address.

At the Monday morning session, the work of the Wider Scope Committee of the Order was outlined by Sidney Kusworn of Dayton, Ohio. As a result of his appeal, the convention decided to collect $200,000. Under the chairmanship of Rabbi Martin Zielonka of El Paso, Texas, memorial services were held Monday afternoon. Rabbi Alfred G. Moses, Rabbi Martin Zielonka, Rabbi David Lefkowitz and Rabbi Emil Leipsizer delivering eulogies.
