Franz M. Philippson, banker and philanthropist, president of the Jewish Colonization Association, died here suddenly of heart failure. He was 78 years old.

Mr. Philippson had come here to participate in the meeting of the Jewish Colonization Association. His body will be taken to Brussels, Belgium, for burial.

Franz Philippson was born in Magdeburg on March 12, 1851, the son of Ludwig Philippson. He was educated in Brussels where in 1871 he founded the banking house which has since taken part in most of the municipal loans and commercial enterprises in Belgium, Italy, Brazil and other countries.

In 1884 he was elected president of the Jewish community of Brussels and a member of the Consistoire Israelite de Belgique.

A farewell reception, planned by the lca on the departure of Dr. and Mrs. James Bernstein for the United States, was cancelled when Mr. Philippson’s death occurred.
