That the efforts undertaken recently by Soviet authorities to place unskilled Jewish laborers in the Don Coal Basin and in other industries, with the exception of the experiment at Kertch, have failed, is admitted by the Yiddish Communist daily, “Emes.”
Two hundred workers who arrived at the metal factories in the Don Basin last month were compelled to return to their towns because of the unfriendly attitude displayed. Three hundred sent by the Comzet from Tottchin to Artiomovsk, were refused admission by the Artiomovsk factory administration. Later, admitted, they were treated so poorly, receiving 60 kopeks per day instead of the one rouble, 20 kopeks promised, that only a few remained.
The Comzet, governmental department for settling Jews on the land, charges the Yevsektzia, Jewish section of the Communist party, with responsibility for the failure at Artiomovsk. The Yevsektzia, on the other hand, denying the accusation, states that the prolongation of such a situation may discredit the Soviet policy among the Jews, therefore the guilty must be found and punished.
