The final rally dinner of the Jewish Hospital campaign was held at the Mount Royal Hotel last night. The campaign was for funds to erect and equip a 200-bed hospital. The sum of $1,600,000 was raised. Allan Bronfman and Michael Hirsch were joint campaign chairmen. Hon. L. A. Taschereau, Premier of the Province of Quebec, Alderman T. Holland, representing Mayor Camillien Houde of Montreal, Sir Henry Grey, formerly Surgeon-in-Chief, Royal Victoria Hospital, Maxwell Goldstein, Peter Bercovitch, S. W. Jacobs and Joseph Cohen, were the principal speakers. Six hundred people, all workers in the campaign, were present.
“I am most happy to say on behalf of the Government of Quebec that our contribution is $300,000, $2 per day per bed,” stated the Premier. “This is no favor but what is definitely due to you. You have done your share and we are happy to cooperate with you.”
Among the contributions were $100,000 from the Silverman family, $75,000 from the Bronfman and Aaron family, $25,000 anonymous, $25,000 Mark Workman, $15,000 Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Vineberg.
In his address Peter Bercovitch expressed the desire that the same Jewish unity in the hospital campaign be shown when the problem of obtaining a seperate panel for the education of Jewish children will arise again.
