Denial that anti-Jewish prejudice exists in Hungary was the keynote of the address before Parliament today by Premier Bethlen. The Premier’s address was in reply to the question of Socialist Deputy Peyser as to what Hungary was prepared to do to protect its Jewish population.
No Jewish deputies participated in the discussion.
Count Bethlen and Deputy Peyser were the only speakers. Deploring that the Socialist Party should have chosen a Parliamentary interpellation as a means of solving the Jewish question, a method which he said is frowned upon by the Jewish deputies. Count Bethlen said Hungary is prepared to to its duty by the Jewish community. The comparison with Palestine, which is a nation, is unfair.
The government is prepared to take severe police measures to quell disturbances in the universities. Police will be authorized to enter school buildings and the University of Budapest closed, if it becomes necessary.
Parliament voted its approval of the Premier’s reply, while Deputy Peyser insisted his interpellation still stands.
