With the death of Harry Hart, president of Hart, Schaffner & Marx, the last surviving member of this nationally know firm of clothing manufacturers has passed. On February 17 Mr. Hart would have been 80 years old.
Since the firm was organized 50 years ago, Mr. Hart has been its president. The company, one of the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, was established as Hart, Abt & Marx Levi Abt, a brother-in-law of Mr. Hart, retired in 1887 and the firm assumed its present name. The other partners, Max Hart, Joseph Schaffner and Marcus Marx died in 1928, 1918 and 1921 respectively.
From 1902 to 1906 Mr. Hart was president of Sinai Congregation and for many years he served as vice-president of the Associated Jewish Charities. He was also greatly interested in the work of Hull House.
Hart, Schaffner & Marx is one of the pioneer clothing manufacturing firms in the United States.
