“Our Sabbath is in danger,” said Rabbi Moses Hymanson, addressing representatives of the Jewish press at a meeting of the executive committee of the League for Safeguarding the Fixity of the Sabbath, held at the Jewish Club. Wednesday night. “The Jews do not realize that if the Eastman Plan for the simplification of the calendar becomes law, religious observation will be materially weakened as the Sabbath will fall on a different day each year. It is up to us to awaken the non-Jews as well as Jews to the impending danger.”
Ae resolution was read which will be presented to Congress by Representative Sol Bloom in which it was resolved that the United States government do not adopt or approve any bill calling for the sending of a delegate to an international conference to consider the adoption of a simplified calendar.
Rabbi Hymanson, who was the chief spokesman for the League, remarked that he had no objection to a calendar change provided it did not affect the Sabbath. He submitted a number of proposed calendar changes that would be satisfactory to the Jews and explained that most Jewish organizations are solidly behind the League’s stand. A plea was made to the Jewish press to help in the matter of fighting the Eastman Plan.
