is virtually in existence yet,” he declared. “The Fascist spirit which prevails now among the Hungarian students and which was created by the present governmental system, makes life for the Jewish students in Hungary difficult and forces them to leave the universities.
“The land reform law, according to which the government is nationalizing part of the land which formerly belonged to the big land owners, hits the Jews more than anyone else. For in reality the land isn’t taken away from the rich land-owners, but from the Jews.
“The present wave of baptism among Hungarian Jews is a result of economic persecutions. The Jews are trying their hardest to be one hundred percent Hungarians, and they believe they can obtain that status through baptism. They believe that in this way they will not be forced out of the economic positions which they now occupy.”
