The Palestine Jewish Labor Party was the name given yesterday to the union of the Achduth Avodah and the Hapoel Hazair at the constituent meeting which unanimously adopted the proposed basis for the amalgamation of the two parties. After a speech by Rubashow, the conference wired congratulations to Eduard Bernstein on his eightieth birthday.
Summarizing a quarter of a century of the struggle of the Jewish laborer in Palestine, Ben-Gurion said that the new party would strive for democracy and freedom for minorities within the federation, for solidarity with the Arabs and for the cultivation of a chalutz (pioneer) reserve. Sprinzak declared that the Inquiry Commission’s proceedings were degrading in that they obliged the Jews to defend themselves from preposterous charges. He said that “there is no question of the Jews’ relations to the Arabs but of the Arabs’ to the Jews.” Pointing out that the new party would not permit a despotism in the Jewish Agency, he finished with a tribute to the Poale Zion for penetrating the ideals of Zion in the Socialist International.
Through the Poale Zion, the newly-created Jewish Labor party decided to participate in the Socialist International. Sprinzak vehemently attacked the Palestine administration for failure to interpret the Palestine Mandate generously.
