The teaching of Hebrew in the high schools of New York was urged by Hyman J. Reit, president of Temple B’nai Israel of Washington Heights in a Chanukah address. He pointed out that Hebrew "is just as classical and cultural a language as Latin and Greek, which are taught in the high schools," and that many Jewish children would prefer to study it.
