At a great public meeting of the Jewish Peace League held here last night in the auditorium of the Musikhochschule, thousands of people were turned back for lack of room. Oscar Wassermann, leading German-Jewish financier, who presided said that Jewry’s interest in peace comes not from cowardice but from the same courage that animated the ancient Jewish prophets in their fight for peace.
Professor Albert Einstein sent a message in which he said that the Jews were thoroughly imbued with the idea of peace. He suggested that Jewry assess a yearly head tax of one mark which is to constitute a peace budget in contrast to the war budgets of governments. Other speakers were Lion Feuchtwanger, rabbis, and representatives of Jewish women’s and Jewish youth organizations.
