The constitutional commission appointed by the Polish Sejm is now discussing changes in the Polish constitution. The government party is for giving the president more powers and for limiting the present powers of the Sejm.
Deputy Gruenbaum, Jewish leader, stated that the Jewish members of parliament are for giving the president more authority by changing the present manner of presidential election, but are against depriving the Sejm of some of its present powers. Gruenbaum said that the main thing to bear in mind in amending the constitution is “the creation of conditions which should make it possible for citizens belonging to the minorities to regard the state not as an instrument of suppression, but as their own state, which provides for their needs as well as for the needs of citizens of the Polish race.”
