Joseph M. Proskauer, Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, will shortly resign from the bench, where he has served since 1923, to resume the private practice of law. Judge Proskauer, one of the closest friends of former Governor Smith and a member of the famous “kitchen cabinet,” was appointed by Governor Smith to the Supreme Court and in the same year was elected in his own right to a 14-year term.
Until 1919 he had held no public office, although he was already a distinguished lawyer. In that year, Governor Smith named him as counsel to the Extraordinary Grand Jury convened to investigate malfeasance in the city government. He was Governor Smith’s campaign manager in 1922.
