Israel Goldstein Says Hoover Should Protest Religious Ban

A protest by President Hoover and the United States Congress to the Soviet government against religious persecutions in Russia would be heeded by that government, in the opinion of Rabbi Israel Goldstein, who delivered a sermon yesterday morning on “Soviet Russia and Religious Persecution” before the Congregation B’nai Jeshurun.

“It is a crime against the conscience of mankind,” said Rabbi Goldstein. “Every humane feeling is outraged by the enormities and barbarities of the anti-religious campaign. Therefore, it is not merely a matter which calls for protests in the name of religion and by organized religious forces. It is a question of human decency and of human freedom of men and women to worship God and to educate their children in accordance with their own religious beliefs. Therefore protests should come from non-religious bodies as well.”
