Hon. Louis Alexandre Taschereau, Premier of the Province of Quebec, has announced that the government will make certain changes in the bill for a separate Jewish school panel recently introduced in the provincial legislature by Peter Bercovitch, M.L.,, and will then itself introduce it in the legislature, for the purpose of solving the Jewish school problem of Montreal.
This government bill would give the Jews of Montreal an opportunity to come to an understanding with the Protestants about the education of their children. Should it be impossible for the Jews to come to an agreement with the Protestants, separate Jewish schools would be established.
The Bercovitch bill, which will soon come up for a second reading before the legislature, calls for the creation of a Jewish section of the “Council of Public Instruction” and Jewish school boards in the municipalities of the province. These bodies would have the right to create separate Jewish schools, in case of failure to agree with the Protestants.
The Premier stated that the government bill will lay the foundation of the apparatus for creating the new school system. The further work necessary will be done by the government itself, through “Orders in Council.” It is understood that the time when such a separate Jewish school panel will be created will also be determined by an “Order in Council.”
