The Austrian Parliament is preparing a new slaughtering law. Until now the committee on justice had decided that prohibition of cruelty to animals does not apply to those things which are done for religious or scientific purposes. Nevertheless the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals has started a protest movement demanding that the government and parliament annul the exemption to religious and scientific slaughtering.

If the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals has its way it will mean that the Jews will have to take measures to protect their rights with regard to schechita, the Jewish method of slaughtering.
