Giacomo de Martino, Italian ambassador to the United States, in a statement on the death of Lord Balfour, said “I have learned of the passing away of Lord Balfour with the deepest sorrow. He was one of the most highly spirited men I ever met and one whose friendship, which I enjoyed during many years, was of the most profound value.

“I have been associated with him in Paris during the Peace Conference and in London while I was ambassador there and I always found in his sound judgment and in his pure character one of the most powerful elements of good understanding, as in his clear intellect I found one of the most noble expressions of human nature.”
