H. C. Luke, chief secretary of the Palestine government and acting High Commissioner during the riots, will accompany the representative of the British government before the Mandates Commission of the League of Nations which meets in June. Although he will not be the British government’s representative—Dr. Drummond Shiels, under-secretary for the Colonies will act in that capacity—he will accompany him with a view to furnishing information to the Mandates Commission and reply to various questions as the person responsible for the government of Palestine during the disturbances.
Parliamentary circles consider it the most natural thing in the world for the Chief Secretary to accompany Dr. Shiels, while in Zionist circles the report has caused astonishment and great disappointment. In order to appear before the Mandates Commission in June, Mr. Luke’s six months’ leave of absence has been extended for a further period, but nothing definite can be said regarding his movements after the Mandates Commission’s sessions.
