Relatives of Rabbis Lazarev, of Leningrad, N. Nemanov, head of the Nevel rabbinical seminary and N. Yasnogorodsky, president of the Leningrad Jewish community, have received word from Russia that these three Jewish leaders, who were exiled to the Solovetski Islands (in the White Sea) are suffering from hunger because they are not supplied with kosher food and from other hardships due to the hard labor they are compelled to do.
Rabbi Lazarev, who is chief rabbi of Leningrad, was arrested February 26 on a charge of maintaining illegal connections abroad. The leaders of the Leningrad Jewish community were arrested for disobeying the regulations laid down with regard to religious communities. Rabbi Lazerev has been sentenced to ten years in exile while the community leaders have received lesser terms.
