The compulsory Sunday rest has finally been abolished in Lithuania, the cabinet ministers deciding that while the law making Sunday a compulsory day of rest will continue to be enforced in Kovno itself trading outside of Kovno will be permitted Sunday afternoons between 1 and 4 P. M.
In explaining the new law it is pointed out that the old restriction was not adapted to Lithuanian life because a majority of the Lithuanians are peasants who are unable to visit the markets on the working days which compelled them to break the law and trade through back doors or through unnecessary intermediaries.
Under the old law non-Christian factory owners and their workers were compelled to work only five days in the week throughout the year, which had an unfavorable effect on their earnings and production. The new law will permit artisans without hired labor to work on Sundays and holidays if they do not work publicly or noisily.
