Characterizing the Jews of America as the “invisible reserve”, Felix M. Warburg told an audience of distinguished Jews here that the duty of American Israel is to strengthen the hands of its leadership by subscribing generously to the $6,000,000 now being raised by the Allied Jewish Campaign.
Mr. Warburg was the guest of honor at a dinner preliminary to the launching of the Philadelphia campaign for $400,000. In his address he reviewed the works of the Joint Distribution Committee in 42 countries, emphasizing the extraordinary achievement in Palestine. Referring to American Jews, Mr. Warburg said “if not for this invisible reserve there would be no Jews in Russia.
“These threads are holding us together. In many European countries Jews are already standing on their feet. Help them to walk.”
In addition to the financial aspect, Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the American Jewish Committee, in his address emphasized the moral issues involved. Over-subscribing the quota, he said, will do more than adopting resolutions or staging demonstrations. Over-subscription, he added, will find its repercussion in the parliaments of Europe. Dr. Adler explained the purposes for which the money is intended and called upon the leaders of the Jewish community to help put the campaign over.
Congressman Benjamin M. Golder, local campaign chairman who presided, announced that the drive here would be officially opened next Sunday with David Bressler, one of the national cochairman, as the principal speaker.
