The press here reports from Geneva that the French representative on the Mandates Commission had asked Dr. Drummond Shiels, British spokesman, how it happened that the Grand Mufti, arrested in 1920, was now drawing a salary from the British government. The French representative also inquired about the Mufti’s agitation against France in Syria, indicating that the Mufti, supported by England was not considering French interests. This, the French representative pointed out, was a matter for the League of Nations.
Dr. Shiels explained that the Mufti had been sentenced for a political offence which could have been cancelled and in the second place the British government did not consider that the Mufti was being paid by the government.
