The names of two Jews are being mentioned among a number of lawyers as successor to Amos W. W. Woodcock as United States District Attorney of Maryland. Mr. Woodcock recently was appointed by President Hoover as United States Director of Prohibition.
Simon E. Sobeloff, now Deputy City Solictor of Baltimore, is said to be the latest to be added to the list of those whose friends are trying to bring about their appointment.
Mr. Sobeloff refuses to enter into any discussion of the matter. It is reported, however, that certain men of weight in the Republican party have made it their business to speak earnestly to United States Senator Philips Lee Goldsborough, of Maryland, to the effect that Mr. Sobeloff would discharge the duties in a capable and creditable manner.
Morton P. Fisher, who served as an assistant to Mr. Woodcock for two years prior to 1925 and who is now a Special Assistant Attorney-General in Washington, is another whose name has been mentioned.
