Four important measures in the interests of Palestinian agriculturists were decided upon today by the Palestine government with the approval of the British secretary of state for Palestinian affairs. These measures as well as the recent halving of the tithe on crops are the outcome of an investigation of Palestinian agricultural problems made by W. J. Johnson, assistant treasurer of Palestine, and R. H. Crosbie, assistant district commissioner for the Southern district with headquarters in Gaza.
The measures to be taken are an increase of fifty percent in the import duty on wheat flour and seminola, the regulation of the importation of wheat flour and seminola under a system of licenses controlled by a permanent committee for commerce and industry, a ban on the importation of unrefined olive oil until further notice and the reimposition of the import duty on sesame seeds.
Jewish and Arab cultivators have long been urging the government to take some steps to protect Palestinian agriculturists from foreign competition. To meet the demands of the cultivators the investigating commission was named. While the commission’s report has not been officially made public its recommendations are apparently being carried into effect piecemeal.
