Further charges that supervisors of the New York City Department of Markets were extorting graft from Jewish butchers of Brooklyn and Queens were made yesterday, after Oscar Glassberg, a Jewish butcher of Brooklyn, had originally charged that market supervisors, whose names he is prepared to furnish before the mayor or his assistant, collected petty graft from him and other Jewish butchers.
Yesterday H. J. Reiter, a kosher butcher of Rockaway Avenue, Queens, declared that he was frightened by Queens politicians and others into withdrawing extortion charges against the Department of Markets supervisor after the latter had taken from Reiter $50 in marked bills. Two days after he withdrew his extortion charges, said Reiter, his butcher shop was served with a summons.
Other Jewish butchers who have been named by Glassberg as victims of extortion by market supervisors have confirmed his statements. They have stated that many Jewish butchers in Brooklyn and Queens are contributing regularly to supervisors of the Department of Markets in order to avoid annoyance and unfavorable publicity which would destroy their trade.
