An investigation into the charges of graft brought by Jewish butchers of Brooklyn and Queens against Department of Public Markets officials was begun on Wednesday by Commissioner of Accounts Higgins upon the order of Mayor Walker. Complaints against the Bureau of Weights and Measures will also be investigated by Mr. Higgins.
Commissioner Higgins announced that his inquiry will be limited to the investigation of specific charges of wrongdoing and declared that he would not subpoena Oscar Glassberg, a Brooklyn kosher butcher who has accused market supervisors of grafting, or other butchers who have brought in complaints. He promised, however, to investigate promptly and thoroughly any information on specific cases of wrongdoing which these men might wish to lay before him.
