Rabbi Jerome Mark, of Selma, Alabama, has been selected by the Governing Body of the World Union for Progressive Judaism to engage in extension work in Melbourne, Australia.
Rabbi Mark is a graduate of the 1918 class of the Hebrew Union College, and has been in charge of the Mishkan Israel pulpit in Selma for four and a half years. He is a member of the Board of Managers of the Department of Synagogue and School Extension, of the Executive Board of the Alabama Tuberculosis Association, and many other city and state welfare bodies. At present is he president of the Dallas County Social Welfare Workers’ Alliance.
The appointment is for a period of six months, during which time the rabbi is expected to survey the field in Melbourne, and to engage in the organization of a liberal Jewish movement there. Temple Mishkan Israel of Selma has granted Rabbi Mark a six months’ leave of absence to facilitate his engaging in this experiment. The rabbi plans to sail from San Francisco on August 21, and arrangements are being made in Melbourne to conduct Reform Jewish New Year and Atonement services for the first time in the history of Australia.
