John Shea, a supervisor of the New York City Department of Public Markets, has been suspended by Commissioner of Public Markets Thomas F. Dwyer after a hearing before Commissioner of Accounts Higgins during which Shea was accused of taking $100 in graft from Julius Richter, a kosher butcher of Rockaway Boulevard Queens.
Commissioner Higgins, who is investigating the graft charges recently brought by kosher butchers against supervisors of the Markets Department, stated on Monday that he is still awaiting the list of names of 25 butchers of Brooklyn and Queens who, according to Oscar Glassberg, a Brooklyn kosher butcher, have been paying graft to supervisors of the Markets Department in order that the latter should not summon the butchers for violation of the kosher laws.
The Federated Kosher Butchers’ Association of New York has approved the plan of Commissioner Dwyer for the issuance of licenses to koscher butchers, it was announced on Monday. This plan, it is believed in many quarters, would serve to eliminate graft-taking in the enforcement of the kosher laws.
