The Arab Executive has decided to call a general Arab strike on August 23, the first anniversary of last year’s riots. The strike will be called as a protest against the reprieve recently granted to the Jewish merchant from Jaffa, Joseph Mizrachi Urphali, whose death sentence was commuted to ten years’ imprisonment. The decision to call a strike followed severe criticism levied against the Arab Executive for its weak stand regarding the reprieve. The Arab Women’s Society is alleging that the reprieve to Urphali shows favoritism to the Jews and is not calculated to improve Arab-Jewish relations.
