A total of $2,083,818 was collected from American Jewry for the aid of the stricken Palestine Jews as a result of the Arab riots of last year, it was announced yesterday by David A Brown, chairman of the Palestine Emergency Fund, in a final report just issued. In addition to this sum there was $30,407.50 earned in interest which makes the total obtained $2,114,225.89. This sum does not include $100,000 which was sent direct to Palestine by Nathan Straus, who gave half of this amount, and by Julius Rosenwald and Felix M. Warburg who each dispatched $25,000.
After pointing out that the cost of raising this large fund was 3 1/2 percent, and if the interest earned is deducted from expenses the cost was only two percent, Mr. Brown said that $146,624.79 of the fund still remains in this country. The monies transmitted abroad during the past year were $716,625.65 to Palestine, $189,242.88 to England and $1,000,000 to the Deutsche Bank in Berlin, under a special agreement with Felix M. Warburg to cover allocations already made by the Palestine Emergency Committee in Palestine, which is composed of Pinchas Rutenberg, Dr. Maurice B. Hexter and Col. Frederick Kisch.
After tracing the history of the Palestine Emergency Fund and paying tribute to the personnel of the organizations which aided in raising the fund, Mr. Brown praised the services of the Yiddish, Anglo-Jewish and general press in opening their columns to a plea for funds. Mr. Brown pointed out that his report does not presume to touch upon the actual expenditure of the Fund, this being in the hands of the Palestine Emergency Fund Committee.
