At an all-day conference to take place on Sunday, September 7, at the Copley-Plaza, there will be organized a Massachusetts committee of sponsors for the American-Jewish Legionaires Colonization Fund. At this time will also be decided the state quota towards the $300,000 national campaign, and the date set for the launching of the drive here.
The Colonization Fund was founded for the purpose of colonizing American-Jewish ex-legionaires in Palestine, and the proceeds of this campaign are intended for the settlement of the first 200 legionaires and their families within the next twelve months. Although the Jewish National Fund is giving each legionaire land and part of the irrigation funds, amounting to $1,000, and although each legionaire is himself contributing $500 towards his own settling, expert opinion has decided that the sum of $3,500 is necessary for the settlement of a family. Therefore, this campaign is being launched in order to raise the balance of $1,500 per family or $300,000 for 200 families.
The national headquarters are in New York, with the Hon. Carl Sherman, Attorney-General, chairman; Jacob de Haas, secretary, and Mrs. Archibald Silverman of Providence, treasurer. Abraham A. Aronoff, field secretary, is at present in this city, making arrangements for the conference.
